WELCOME

At Omagh WadoKai we are proud of our links with Japan, from the club’s inception we have maintained a strong association with a host of top Japanese Sensei. We are currently the only local club to be registered directly with Japanese Wadokai headquarters, and Sensei Sakagami {7th Dan} visits our club 4 times a year for grading and technical instruction. Club Instructor Paul Sweeney, has taken every opportunity to bring World renowned masters to our doorstep, and has encouraged us all to travel to as many courses abroad as possible. Three instructors from the club recently attended the Masters Course in Reading and for the last 15 years we have had club members participating with the Irish Squad in numerous international events throughout the world, from London to Japan.

Senior Club Instructor Paul Sweeney has been training in Wado Karate since February 1978 and has witnessed the club growing dramatically over that time. From half a dozen people training in the old ‘Boys and Girls club’ to having over 200 members with clubs in, Carrickmore, Killyclogher, Newtownstewart, Drumquin, Enniskillen, Omagh Leisure Centre, and The Station Centre. The emphasis has not changed over the years, the club is still dedicated to training in traditional Japanese Karate and we encourage young and old to join in and ‘have a go.’ We have earned a reputation for our hard training and competitiveness and believe that there is much to be gained through Karate.

John Burt is awarded his 1st Black Belt from Sensei Sakagami 7th Dan

Local man John Burt, 32 has  been a dedicated student with Omagh Wado Kai club since 1993. John who comes from Newtownstewart and works for Ultra Galvanisers and Sallys Night Club is delighted to finally achieve his black belt.John has a fanatical interest in the martial arts and has represented Ireland in several international events, including The European Championships in Sweden and the Saguira Cup in Japan, he trains at a very high level and is known for his flexibility and high kicks. The grading examination followed a tough weekend course with Sensei Sakagami focusing on the finer points of the shodan syllabus and demonstrating the importance of basic techniques in creating power. Club instructor Paul Sweeney congratulated John on his successful grading and said the whole club were pleased that he had done so well, but reminded John that his first dan was just the start of his karate journey and more hard training was on the way. John will now be registered with Wado Headquarters in Japan as a recognised black belt and receive a certificate of confirmation. Rodney Timoney from Enniskillen, who graded last year has just been awarded his certificate and continues to teach in Enniskillen Forum. Omagh Club wish to congratulate John and Rodney on their success. (see pic)
